How does ethnnocentricity cause conflict?

On January 26th 1788, British colonizer arrived at place where now it's called "Sydney". The people known as, the First Australian had different physical appearance and cultures unlike British. Contacts betweem two different cultures formed a biased view, which developed into perspective of ethnnocentrism. British's over exaggerated ethnnocentrism perspective towards the aboriginal result in colonization, and harsh contacts.

First impression of the First Australian, wasn't surely what British have thought of, as the aboriginal was not reaching the standard of British. British believed that the First Australians lacked of every single manners and cultures. After the first contact between the aborignal, Phillip, the leader of British said we would be able to get the land, addressing the fact that British holds the power and the aborignals were 'native' and savage. The First Australians had 'uncilvilized' life according to British's standard of cultures, laws and manners. This idea generated from the British ethnnocentricity view, caused conflict as British wanted 'un-wanted' man to die out from their society. This ethnnocentricity view towards the First Australian, concluded that British have rights to colonize the land as British thought it was one of white man's burden that they had to carry.

These negative perspective of the First Australian, created by the ethnnocentrism of British, British believed that aborignal had to be educated, to act like the white man. Bennelong, the leader of the First Australian was "sent" to the Great Britian as British believed that the leader of aborignal must be changed before they manipulate the other natives from becoming like cilvilized man. However, the idea of manipulating and educating aborignal was unsucessful, as Bennelong became addicts to alcohol and was worsen. Bennelong becoming rum-addict created negative sterotype of natives, that all of aborignals are alchol-addict. And British wanted to weep off the 'rum-addict' natives from Australia, and forget about them forever.

The First Australian had their own cultures, but it was devasted by the fact that British's culture was unquestionable and right. Despting that the First Australian had their own cultures which they believed it was right, the British started to take over the native's land, because in British's ethnnocentricity perspective, British culture was much cilvized and natives culture savage. The aborignal, now had no lands to cultivate crops, they couldn't hold anymore ethnnocentrism of British. The First Australian, leaded by Pemulwuy burnt all the British's supplies and crops, using strategy that British have never thought of. This resulted conflicts between British and the aborignal, which more evolved into a war betwen them. The arrogant British emphasized the end of the war by slashing of Pemulwuy's head. However, in First Australian perspective, it was more like an insult than the end of war, as the natives couldn't have proper ritual ceremonies for Pemulwuy. British's ignorant act towards the native, caused several conflicts more.

Everything started off from the ethnnocentrism of British, which caused further troubles and conflicts. If British didn't look aborignal in ethnnocentristic perspective in the beginning, it would've caused no conflict, and everyone would live in peace. If British kept looking aborignal in ethnnocentristic point of view, it would've caused more severe deaths and injuries. Ethnocentrisim can be useful in a way, but looking other culture in ethnocentrism -should be disposed and gone forever.

Julius Caesar: Solo/Duet Performance Assessment

Julius Caesar - Act one, Scene 1, line 35~ 76.

Context: Marullus and Flavius are worried about Caesar, how he is going to debase the pride of Romans and take away the freedom and liberty - on the day of Lupercal.

Meaning of the passage: Marullus complains Flavius, how Caesar is treated like a savior and God of the Rome as he is disgusted on commoners that they '...put on your best attire' to see Caesar. Marullus believes that he 'came in triumph over Pompey's blood', and he shouldn't be celebrated nor be welcomed. He certainly disagrees with the commoners who praised Caesar, and said "You blocks, you stones, you wrose than senseless things!". This was the first time that Romans have turned back to Caesar and go against him. Even though this passage is short, but still has lots of meanings since it foreshadows that there will be conflict between Caesar and others like Flavius and Marullus who will go against him.

Significance of the passage: This passage is significance because this was the first time that Romans went against Caesar, so that represents that there are people who go against Caesar. This whole passage tells (foreshadows) that this is going to build up a climax conflict between favor of Caesar and against Caesar. Since this gives clues to audiences that there will be more people who will go against Caesar, as later on Brutus and conspirators go against Caesar. Without this passage, there will be less tension to the book at the beginning of the book, and therefore, it wouldn't hook the readers to read more if this passage wasn't written. Thus, this passage is very significant.

MARULLUS:
Wherefore rejoice? What conquest brings he home?
What tributaries follow him to Rome,(35)
To grace in captive bonds his chariot-wheels?
You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things!
O you hard hearts, you cruel men of Rome,
Knew you not Pompey? Many a time and oft
Have you climb'd up to walls and battlements,(40)
To towers and windows, yea, to chimney tops,
Your infants in your arms, and there have sat
The live-long day with patient expectation
To see great Pompey pass the streets of Rome.
And when you saw his chariot but appear,(45)
Have you not made an universal shout,
That Tiber trembled underneath her banks
To hear the replication of your sounds
Made in her concave shores?
And do you now put on your best attire?(50)
And do you now cull out a holiday?
And do you now strew flowers in his way
That comes in triumph over Pompey's blood?
Be gone!
Run to your houses, fall upon your knees,(55)
Pray to the gods to intermit the plague
That needs must light on this ingratitude.

FLAVIUS:
Go, go, good countrymen, and, for this fault,
Assemble all the poor men of your sort,
Draw them to Tiber banks, and weep your tears(60)
Into the channel, till the lowest stream
Do kiss the most exalted shores of all.

(Exeunt all the Commoners.)

See, whether their basest metal be not moved;
They vanish tongue-tied in their guiltiness.
Go you down that way towards the Capitol;(65)
This way will I. Disrobe the images,
If you do find them deck'd with ceremonies

MARULLUS:
May we do so?
You know it is the feast of Lupercal.

FLAVIUS:
It is no matter; let no images(70)
Be hung with Caesar's trophies. I'll about,
And drive away the vulgar from the streets;
So do you too, where you perceive them thick.
These growing feathers pluck'd from Caesar's wing
Will make him fly an ordinary pitch,(75)
Who else would soar above the view of men
And keep us all in servile fearfulness.

Learning Profile

During the humanities, we talked about the 'Learning Profile', what type of learner you were. We had to find out what dominant body parts we use daily-life because your dominant body part will determine your ability and skills as well as your learning type. We were separated into small part of groups with three people maximum, and took the test procedure to find out our dominant part of bodies. After that, we had to sort out what type of thinker you are. Our brain is separated into two different hemisphere, left and right, which each represented logic and gestalt. My overall test designated that I am biased mostly at my right with exception of eye and brain. My dominant brain was left, representing that I am a logical thinker. As a result, I received Profile C. This profile manifests the ways to improve my learning as well as the lack of ability.

My profile C sheet claims that I will mostly learn best when focusing on the auditory details, and then comes analysis, verbalization, and writing. The statement of the Learning Profile is very factual and accurate; mostly when I come to the stage where I can't comprehend music, math and English's theme, main idea & point, facts manifested on the book, I try to listen to the others. Most Koreans I know, are very analyzable unlike me, - if there's something they don't understand, they reiterate reading the book and try to figure out what's happening and that's very opposite of me; as I prefer to listen and hear to others rephrase or their ideas. The benefit of learning best on auditory is definitely, music. The main reason why I am very talented as most people states, is that I have very sophisticated ears, picking up every single notes and details. Although I believe that my efforts and love towards music created 'me' right now, I am fully aware that the main reason that I am above the standard skill of music is my auditory skills.

Another statement from my profile sheet is, I prefers structured learning and appreciates orderly sequencing of information, and has ability to follow step by step which is again, very true of me. I always try to re-interpret the teaching as a structured learning, by stating main points in bullet points. Also, I love teachers who are very structured and teach in orderly sequencing of information. Since I prefer structured learning, I always have trouble learning math, especially when it comes to Korean education math style. Korean education math style is very unclear and obscure, doesn't have clear answers to its question. In Korean math education style, they don’t have a clear sequencing of information; sometimes learns geometry then straight into equation. They force us to memorize all the equations without knowing what that represent. Because of that, Korean math education style has very bad sequence of information; they don't start math from the basic then build up, but starts at the advanced, then to basic and back again to advanced. As this keeps repeating, forming a cycle where I literally don't learn anything at all.

The strategies that would help me in my learning are to understand and synthesize information from a whole perspective, and explore ambiguity, emotions and movement. For me, I have trouble understanding and synthesizing information given to me. However, unlike any other friends, once I start understanding the information, I catch them up really fast and go beyond the imaginary. I can come up with creative and unique ideas - once I understand the information. Once I start to have ability to synthesize information, it would help me to increase the speed of gaining knowledge.

First above all, I would like teachers to know about me that, since I really lack of ability of understanding as well as synthesizing the information, I would really appreciate extra information given to me that's orderly sequenced with structured information, even though I ask teachers for the extra help. If teachers can boost me up to understand information, I would be able to devise with deeper ideas and analysis during the discussion and other classes. On the other hand, I would like teachers to know that I would like to work and study in a quiet environment, not busy and distracting places. As I have very sophisticated on my auditory even though I am reading or talking, I would easily get distracted. Also, I would like teachers to know that I would prefer to have a partner who concentrates and offers fresh ideas to me. For me, I don't prefer and like people who are just talented and wants to do all work by themselves. On the other hand, I also don't like useless partners who leaves all the work to me, relying on me that I will get A on the project. I just like to have a partner who concentrates on the work and tries to put effort into something, someone who has passionate in learning. In my perspective, I love people who studies with passion when they study, and who plays with passion when they play - because I am a type like that - who studies hard when I need to study and plays with friends with efforts put in when I play.

As a conclusion, the learning profile gave opportunities for me to turn back and think again about my characteristic as well as my learning style. I personally think that 'Learning Profile' should be spread throughout the world so that everyone has opportunities to look back at themselves and think carefully about what you should do right now.

The Anatomy Lesson - Does This Reflect Renaissance?

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt (1632)

'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp' shown above was painted in 1632 - the time during the Renaissance. 'This art piece was drawn by master of chiaroscuro, Rembrandt. This art piece was painted with oil pastel on the canvas. The focal point of this picutre is the man digesting the human body. Digesting human body shows that this art piece is a reflection of what was happening during the Renaissance. During the Middle Ages, people weren't allowed to digest human body however, people were allowed to digest the human body, only for specific reasons as shown in the picture above. The man with the black hat, Dr. Nicolaes Tulp is digesting human body in the picture, which shows that scientists were allowed anatomy to develop further. Also, this shows that church/pope started to lose the power of people - allowing people to inquire the church and allowing to begin humanism/secularism. 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp' - Dr. Nicolaes digesting human body, shows the power losing from church, creating humanism/secularism due to the loss of pope's people, inspiring people to inquire and to have innovative thinking.

Driving Forces of the Renaissance

"A Banking/ Trading Scene" 1541.

"Which one driving force do you think was the most crucial in creating the Renaissance's explosion of ideas? Why?

The Renaissance was a movement during the dark 'period', from 14th century, till the 16th century which first began in Florence, a city states of Italy. Trading was the most crucial in creating the Renaissance's explosion of ideas because when Italy first began to trade with oriental countries, sailors discovered the new knowledgeand the new solutions to govern the city-states without problem, as well as the new educations and realized that other countries were more developed than Italy. After people heard about the oriental countries, scientists, artists and all other people were inspired and started to work harder to gain new knowledge. So, all driving forces were foundation of the trading and banking.

iBelieve...

In Korea, there's an idiom "Genius can't overcome the person who puts efforts but the person who puts efforts can't overcome the person who enjoy themselves.

I believe I can go beyond my capacity if I enjoy myself rather than trying my best effort to achieve something. This thought first came to my mind when I started to become talented and achieve my goal at music. The story began when I was 5th grade student. When I started to play my 2nd instrument – saxophone, I had put lots of effort to play this complicated, heavy instrument. However, it was hard and complicated than I expected and my efforts were pretty useless.

The time passed on and I still couldn’t play this gigantic instrument but I wanted to play this saxophone well. I tried and tried, but didn’t work. But at least I was better than other sax players who never tried to get better. However, I wasn’t satisfied. Then, I just started to enjoy learning instruments.

Over few days later, I became the best sax player in my whole grade. Then, I started to enjoy music and I started to learn more instruments such as oboe, drum, flute, piano, bass, trombone, etc. Now, I can’t remember how many instruments I learnt over one year. My music skills and the adapting new instruments skills were much better than before because I started to enjoy music, not just putting my effort. Then, I was proud of myself and thought I should learn more music instruments because I enjoy it and it has lots of benefits of learning new instruments.

As I started to enjoy music, music became one of my favorite subjects in the school. As I enjoyed myself, my music grades got better. My music skills improved. So, I thought. If I enjoy myself rather than trying my best effort to achieve something, I can go beyond my capacity.

How about you?
